As winter gradually transitions into spring, I’ve been reflecting on how I’ve spent the first few months of the year. The quiet time between January and now has been an opportunity to reassess my priorities, focus on what truly matters, and rediscover my sense of balance. As a counsellor, I know that balance is essential—not only for my personal well-being but also for the work I do with my clients. Taking time to nurture my own growth has been key to being more present and effective in supporting others.

Prioritising What Matters Most

This year, I made a conscious decision to align my actions with my core values—connection, authenticity, growth, and compassion. For so long, I’d been running on autopilot, juggling responsibilities and trying to meet external expectations. But now, I’m asking myself: What truly matters to me?

I’ve focused on investing time and energy in the things that nourish me most. Whether it’s spending quality time with my family, getting creative just for fun, or carving out moments for reflection and personal development, I’ve intentionally created space for what matters most. Family, in particular, has become a central part of this balance, offering me love and support that helps keep me grounded.

Giving Space for Rest

One of the most important lessons I’ve learned during this time is the value of rest. In a culture that often glorifies constant busyness, it’s easy to forget that rest isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity. The phrase 'Self Care' seems to feel like another item on my 'to-do list', and perhaps there is a narrative that it is a lovely way to 'treat yourself', but only once you've finished the 'more important' work. I began referring to this instead as 'Essential Personal Maintenance and Enrichment'—I know that I will be on a fast-track to burnout without it. Taking time to recharge allows me to show up more fully for myself and for my clients. It creates a foundation of resilience, helping me face the demands of each day with a sense of calm, rather than overwhelm.

Introducing Rhythms of Gentle Exercise, Mindfulness, and Prayer

Balance isn’t just about rest—it’s also about movement, mindfulness, and grounding. Over the past few months, I’ve introduced gentle rhythms of exercise, mindfulness, and prayer into my routine. Morning prayer and yoga-style stretches help to centre me and set an intention for the day ahead. Midday mindfulness practices give me a chance to tune into my body and emotions, offering a brief pause from the busyness of life. And gentle exercise, whether it’s a walk in the morning, stretching in the evening, or a gentle swim with a friend, moving in a way that feels good has been a way to refresh both my body and mind.

Embracing Neurodivergence

As someone who is neurodivergent, I’ve learned to respect my unique rhythms and needs. Some days, my focus and energy levels fluctuate in ways that others might not experience, and that’s okay. I’ve adjusted my routine to be flexible and accommodating of these natural variations. This self-awareness allows me to move through the day with more ease and helps me create an environment that works with my neurodivergence, not against it.

How This Journey Enhances My Work

The balance I’ve worked hard to create in my own life has made me more present, compassionate, and attuned to my clients. As a counsellor, I understand that in order to help others find balance, I must first take care of my own well-being. When I’m grounded and in tune with myself, I’m better equipped to hold space for others, listen deeply, and offer support from a place of understanding.

By prioritising rest, mindfulness, and gentle exercise, I’ve learned the importance of pacing myself and listening to my own needs—practices that I can share with my clients. When I take care of myself, I’m not only enhancing my own life, but I’m also able to offer more to the people I serve.

Looking Ahead

As spring arrives, I carry with me the lessons of these past months. Balance is not a fixed destination but a dynamic flow that requires constant attention and care. I am committed to continuing the practices that support my well-being, knowing that doing so will help me serve others more authentically and effectively.

Whether you’re a fellow counsellor, a client, or someone simply seeking more harmony in life, I encourage you to reflect on your own priorities. What will nourish you, help you rest, and bring balance to your life? The journey toward balance is ongoing, but with patience, self-compassion, and a focus on what matters most, it’s a journey worth taking.
